This event has grown since its inception in 1993, and now encompasses over six blocks of Main Street and will typically attract over 30,000 people during this 3-day event. A Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS)-sanctioned competition, BBQers from all over the country will compete for the top prizes (Grand Champion & Reserve Grand Champion) and become eligible to compete in the American Royal – the “World Series” of Barbecue.
This year’s BBQ Challenge kicks off Thursday evening with live music (act TBA) on the main stage at the corner of Madison Ave. and Main St.
Then, on Friday at 11am – 9pm (Saturday: 10am – )6pm, the real fun begins as BBQ sales open to the public. From Madison Ave. to 5th Ave. on Main St., approximately 70 BBQers will be competing for a variety of awards. The categories include pork, ribs, chicken, brisket, anything goes, barbecue sauce, side dish, salsa, and dessert. This is your chance to taste some of the best BBQ dishes around.
Besides live music all day on Friday and Saturday (acts TBA), BBQ festival-goers will be able to watch Chef Demonstrations on the Viking Stage, Pig Races, a Whiskey Tour (advance registration required), and other popular festival activities.
Remember, this event is free to attend, but you will need to purchase “Hogbacks” (the currency of the event) to purchase food, beverages, souvenirs, and children’s activities. One ticket = one dollar. This is a pet-free event due to safety concerns for your pet and others.
