The Dog Days of Frisco, Colorado: Celebrate Mardi Gras & Valentine’s Day with Your Furry Friend

Mardi Paws Barkus ParadeOwning a dog in Summit County is an absolute must for dog lovers. Besides all of the dog-friendly activities to take part in on a daily basis, the Town of Frisco has just the event for you! Valentine’s Day (and Mardis Gras) will never be the same with Frisco’s Main Street “Mardi Paws Barkus Parade,” Saturday, February 14th at 3pm.

Whether you live in the area, or are just visiting with your four-legged friend in tow, this parade – inspired from the Bacchus Parade in New Orleans – will be one Valentine’s Day/Mardi Gras event not to be missed.  The League for Animals & People of the Summit (LAPS) and The Lost Cajun Restaurant have combined forces to create this once-in-a-lifetime costume parade for dogs and their families. Taking place from 2nd Street down to 7th Street, the Parade offers anyone and everyone a chance to view the colorful canines and their entourage in all their furry glory.

Dog-paradeDogs in costumes will be awarded prizes for the King of the Cajuns and Queen of Romp, as well as a full court of other winners (Knight of the Food Table, Baroness of Bark, Belinda’s Valentine). The parade, judging, games, and refreshments will all take place from 3-6pm right outside the front doors of our Frisco bed and breakfast. Enjoy listening to festive Mardi Gras music while taking in a New Belgium beer or wine, hot coffee from Abbey’s, and/or a hot chocolate during “Yappy Hour.” Make the most of your time by also participating in games, doing some doggie socializing, and grabbing a photo opportunity from professional photographer, Emily of Keeping Composure Photography.

This special event is for dog owners and non-dog owners alike, but if you would like to enter your pooch, you can register online, mail a check and registration form, or register at the event starting at 3pm on parade day. Each paid registration receives a Mardi Gras bandana, beads, dog treats, and a token for one free bowl of gumbo and a beignet. A special “doggy brew” will be available for purchase as well. If you don’t have a furry friend and just want to come join the fun as a spectator, you can purchase tokens for the gumbo and drinks at the event as well.

This event is more than just mere pomp and circumstance, however, as all proceeds benefit LAPS programs, including animal shelter spay/neuter assistance, veterinary discount vouchers for spay/neuter, low income medical assistance for companion animals, the “Chappy Fund” for abused pets, and the “Cheyenne Fund” for pets with life-shortening illnesses.

So, why not mix it up a bit this year for your Valentine’s Day/Mardi Gras celebration with the Mardi Paws Barkus Parade? Fido likes a good party too!
