The Calendar Says May, But “The Basin” Is Still Shakin’!
Posted by: admin May 13th, 2014
It may be the middle of May, but the snow is still falling (as evident by the foot of snow fallen in the past week) and Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort is still operating. Referred to as “A-Basin” by locals, the mountain is the typically the last of our local ski resorts to close for the season and is still boasting an 83” snow depth of powder/packed powder conditions. So, as the ski patrol posted on their website today … “Get out and get some!”
The calendar still says that it is in fact springtime, and in that vein, the festivities will not stop for Mother Nature. Make some turns in the morning and put on your party hat in the afternoon with all of the exciting activities going on before closing day (whenever that may be).
Make A Day Of It – A-Basin Style!
A-Basin is not your typical ski resort. The staff prides itself on being the last mountain to close for the season, and for that reason, “The Basin” is the place to go for late spring skiing with some extracurricular activities mixed in for good measure. One of A-Basin’s claims to fame is a popular spot referred to as “The Beach.” No, there is no white sand or a blue sea to dip your toes into, but The Beach is Colorado’s whacky version of paradise.
An affectionate name for A-Basin’s Early Riser parking lot, The Beach is a stretch of prime real estate that backs up to the three lower mountain chairlifts. The Beach is the perfect spot to kick back between runs, to grill some burgers and dogs and sit back and enjoy one of Colorado’s infamous “blue-bird” days. On weekends, you will also just happen to have front row seats to some live and free entertainment. The Beach fills up fast (especially this time of year) with 10 spots available for reservations and the rest first-some, first-served, so now is the time to plan your trip.
Every Saturday during the month of May, the FREE Shakin’ at the Basin May Concert Series brings you live Colorado-style music in the base area of A-Basin. Tailgate at The Beach or just pop out of your skis and soak it all in with Funky Johnson (May 17), High Five (May 24) and The Champions (May 31).
The 13th Annual Festival of the Brewpubs is also back again this year on Sunday, May 25, 2014. Join locals and visitors alike for A-Basin’s largest party of the year. Sample beer from 12 breweries from Summit County and Colorado while taking in some Rocky Mountain DanceGrass from the Colorado-bred band, Whitewater Ramble.
Of course you will be staying at the Frisco Lodge (hint, hint), a Frisco bed & breakfast, but don’t worry about getting to and from Frisco and Arapahoe Basin! The Summit Stage bus service runs from all towns in Summit County and is a great way to save gas, save money and its completely FREE!
With all that is going on, and the lack of crowds during this time of year, you will want to plan a trip to Summit County pronto! And of course, mud season rates are in effect at the Frisco Lodge until May 22nd! In addition, Book for 3 or more nights and receive 15% off your entire stay (please mention when booking).
We hope to see you at The Beach!
